When we think of our beautiful east coast we think of the pōhutukawa. The pōhutukawa (Metrosideros excelsa) is a native tree in New Zealand, known for its striking crimson flowers and its ability to thrive in coastal and rocky environments. It's often referred to as the "New Zealand Christmas tree" because it typically blooms around the Christmas season in December, covering its branches with vibrant red or sometimes orange-red flowers.
The pōhutukawa's flowers are characterized by their vibrant color and distinctive shape. They have a cluster of stamens that extend outward, giving the flower a somewhat spiky appearance. These flowers attract various native birds, including tui and bellbirds, which feed on their nectar.
